The Proper Use Of Heading Tags To Improve Your SEO

Heading tags are HTML elements which are used to separate the heading of a webpage from the remaining content. The heading tags span from h1 to h6. The most vital being the h1 tag and the least important, h6. For a good SEO rating, the header tag elements from h1 to h6 must follow a hierarchical order. This means that you cannot have an h3 tag before an h2 tag else the structure would be broken which is not good for on-page SEO

The structure of your header tags should be something like this:

<h1>Main Heading</h1>
    <h2>Sub Heading</h2>
        <h3>Sub-section of the Sub heading</h3>
<h4>Sub-section of the heading above </h4>
    <h2>Sub Heading</h2>
        <h3>Sub-section of the Sub heading</h3>
            <h4>Sub-section of the heading above</h4>

You would notice there is a nice flow of information when arranged this way. This is good for user experience and also for search engines. Every page of your website must have an h1 tag.

Why you should use heading tags

The heading tag is used to differentiate  segments of a webpage content. It has a profound impact on the SEO of your site and also its usability.

  • Heading tags give the user a clear idea of what the page content is about.

From a user’s viewpoint:

  • The h1 tags at the beginning of a webpage helps to give  quick summary of the content of the page. The user immediately knows whether or not the page is worth his time.
  • It makes people using screen readers navigate your site easily.
  • Users can scan the content of a page by reading the different heading tags on the webpage.

Heading tags dont’s:

  • Do not stuff your heading tags with keywords.
  • Do not use more than one h1 tag on a page unless really necessary.
