About Anchor Texts, What are those and how do they work?

So if you are familiar with the term “Link Building” with regards to Search Engine Optimization then you should know exactly what Anchor Texts are… In case you don’t however, link building describes actions aimed at increasing the number and quality of inbound links to a webpage. And Anchor text is the clickable text in a hyperlink. SEO best practices dictate that anchor text be relevant to the page you’re linking to, rather than generic text.

Got it? Great, let’s move on…

The Anchor text generally is supposed to tell a user or a search engine robot what the site you are linking to is about… There is also the case of something called “generic” anchor text where the anchor text is basically something naturally obtained from linking sites like “click here”, “read more” or “visit website”. Stuff like that.

In this age of Google

Google has algorithms in place to weed out anchor text spammers, or in any case, “Over optimizers”. The entire Google bit is set up in such a way that you cannot and must not have a flooding amount of keyword rich anchor text pointing to your site, in fact it has been said that it is way safer and wiser to keep keyword rich anchor texts to well below 25% (and that is for all your keywords not just one). So how exactly are we expected to invest in our search engine rankings or improve our search engine rankings for the keyphrase “Buy adult diapers in Lekki” if a bulk of our links say “click here” because we are trying to be safe… How?

I’d tell you how! Quality trumps quantity! This has always been true and it will always be true… In my experience, If you managed to get one link from Mashable with the Anchor text “Adult diapers” it would do your business a lot more good than if you got 500 spammy social bookmarking links from Asia with the exact same keyword…

Don’t get me wrong I am not saying Social bookmarks or directory submissions don’t work… In fact if done right these can work wonders – but you have to understand in the game of SEO, quantity never wins – in fact quantity might get you in a lot of trouble. Quality on the other hand gets you where you are going in less time.
